For me, the morning routine starts the night before. Knowing what time I want to wake up in the morning dictates what time I must go to bed to ensure adequate sleep. Most nights, I’m in bed by 9:20 so I can wake up without an alarm at 4:40.
When I wake up, I get a thermos of filtered water. I sprinkle some salt in it and drink it. Then, I do some head and neck rotations, arm and shoulder rotations, hip rotations, and finish with knee and ankle rotations.
After this brief warm up, I’m ready to go to the gym.
At the gym, I get about 25 to 35 minutes of weight training or cardio on the treadmill.
Then, it is back to home where I shower and get ready for work.
If you’ve made it this far, you might be surprised to learn that I am not a full-time hypnotist (yet). I currently work full-time at a cabinet manufacturer.
This is my usual morning routine. Occasionally, I break this pattern either because I’m sick or didn’t sleep well (because I went to bed later than I should, or because my kids had a nightmare, or there was a thunderstorm and tornado warning, or my wife gets up multiple times). And when those days happen, I don’t let it bother me. I take those days as the natural rhythm of life. I see it as an opportunity to slow down.
When that happens, I look inward. I meditate. I pray. I journal. And sometimes, I will admit, I get excited about the content I’m putting out into the world and want to check its performance in the morning.
None of these are bad things by themselves. But if they become habits, they can derail all the progress I have made over the past three years.
So yes, most days, I do the right stuff. And some days, I take it easy.
It’s not necessarily about having a rigid schedule and checking off a list of tasks to feel like you are winning. It’s more about being intentional with your time, being in the moment, and not judging yourself for every little failure.
Find the rhythm that works for you and do it, because you don’t need to find the right morning routine, you only need to find your morning routine.
